Ethernet data or discrete outputs for a simple detection station?

The PLC only needs an occupied or clear signal, but we may want diagnostics and raw scan data later. Is it better to choose a sensor configuration around discrete outputs, or keep Ethernet as the primary interface?

Separate the real-time control requirement from diagnostics. A simple PLC signal can remain the operational interface while Ethernet is used for configuration, logging or future analysis, provided the selected product and architecture support that arrangement.
