I want to detect whether plastic totes are correctly positioned at a transfer station. The sensor would be mounted above the station, and the tote may be black or blue. What should be validated before selecting TiM561-2050101 for this task?

Test the closest working distance, the tote edge that must remain visible and the return from the darkest plastic. A recorded empty-station scan and several loaded scans will show whether a stable geometric rule can separate the states.

Include the fixture, operator hands and any moving conveyor parts in the trial. A presence rule that works on an isolated tote can become unreliable when nearby hardware enters the scan plane.
